INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CENTRE INTRODUCES FREE ECG TO HELP WITH DIAGNOSISOF HEART CONDITIONS
International Medical Centre (IMC) has introduced free Electrocardiogram (ECG) belt services at all its branches. Tests will be conducted using the new and improved 12-Lead ECG Belt.
The ECG is a diagnostic test that assesses the electrical activity of the heart, which determines the effectiveness of heart function. Abnormal electrical activity is a pointer to underlying heart conditions such as Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), Heart Attacks, Coronary Heart Disease, Ischemic heart disease (condition when the arteries supplying the heart are narrowed).
Recent studies in Kitovu Hospital, Masaka have revealed that High Blood Pressure is a leading cause of morbidity while Heart Failure is a leading cause of mortality in this population. Unfortunately, many times such conditions are diagnosed at an advanced stage long after symptoms have presented and these include chest pain, palpitations (rapid heartbeats), and shortness of breath.
A conventional ECG that is used in the diagnosis of these heart diseases is fitted with a number of electrodes which are placed on the skin to detect this electrical activity. The new ECG belt, however, is an improved version of the conventional ECG that has eliminated these and other hurdles that have been encountered.
This ECG belt maintains the 12-Leads but comes with numerous other benefits;
“Usually, ECGs are conducted using the conventional ECG which requires technical expertise, inconveniencing shaving of the chest and removal of under garments alongside a need for new electrodes with each test,” said Dr. Arthur Sessanga, the Director of Clinical Services at IMC. “This made the test costly and cumbersome but with the new ECG belt all these encumbrances are done away with and this enables early detection of heart diseases.” added Dr. Arthur.
The 12-Lead ECG belt is patch free (requires no gel nor peel of hair, it is cost effective, as it does not require disposables, and allows for repetitive application (same electrode application in all patients). It is simple to use and can be operated by anybody. In Uganda, the new ECG belt was introduced in 2015 and has been verified by the National Drug Authority. Free ECG services will be available at all IMCs, starting January 2018.
IMCs are a growing network of 23 clinics in Uganda. We take an evidence-based approach in our clinical practice, which ensures our patients get appropriate and cost effective treatment. Also part of the International Medical Group (IMG), IMC is the leading primary healthcare provider in Uganda.
